The Tesla Powerwall 3 is the battery most homeowners picture when they think “home backup.” Now in its third generation, it folds a full 13.5 kWh of storage and a built-in solar inverter into one wall-mounted unit — meaning installers no longer need a separate inverter to pair it with your panels. That integration is the whole story here: fewer components, faster installs, and a single Tesla app to manage everything from storm watch alerts to real-time energy flow.
Where the Powerwall 3 really separates itself is output. At up to 11.5 kW continuous, it can carry far more of a home’s load than most single-unit competitors, including full HVAC systems during an outage. Stack up to four units with expansion packs and you’re looking at nearly 95 kWh of whole-home backup. The tradeoff is flexibility: this is a go-big system, not a start-small one — and with the federal battery tax credit gone as of 2026, that upfront cost matters more than it used to.
