Tesla Powerwall 3

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is the battery most homeowners picture when they think “home backup.” Now in its third generation, it folds a full 13.5 kWh of storage and a built-in solar inverter into one wall-mounted unit — meaning installers no longer need a separate inverter to pair it with your panels. That integration is the whole story here: fewer components, faster installs, and a single Tesla app to manage everything from storm watch alerts to real-time energy flow.

Where the Powerwall 3 really separates itself is output. At up to 11.5 kW continuous, it can carry far more of a home’s load than most single-unit competitors, including full HVAC systems during an outage. Stack up to four units with expansion packs and you’re looking at nearly 95 kWh of whole-home backup. The tradeoff is flexibility: this is a go-big system, not a start-small one — and with the federal battery tax credit gone as of 2026, that upfront cost matters more than it used to.

✅ Pros:

Integrated solar inverter (up to 11.5 kW AC)
highest continuous output in class
excellent app/software
up to 4 units stackable + 3 expansion packs (94.5 kWh max)
storm watch feature

❌ Cons:

No standalone federal tax credit as of 2026
cellular backup not recommended as primary connectivity
requires Tesla Backup Gateway 2

UL 9540A (unit-level fire testing), plus UL 1973 and UL 9540

Compatibility

Inverter Compatibility:
Built-in hybrid inverter (integrated solar inverter) — no separate string/hybrid inverter needed; supports up to 20 kW DC solar input across 3 MPPTs
Coupling Type:
DC-coupled (with built-in inverter); can also connect AC-coupled loads via Gateway
Stackable/Expandable:
Yes — expandable up to 4 units per Gateway (54 kWh), and multiple Gateways can scale further (up to 44 kW / 94.5 kWh systems)

Warranty

Product Warranty:
10-year warranty, guaranteeing 70–80% capacity retention at year 10 (figure varies slightly by market/documentation); full warranty requires the unit stay connected to the internet
